Duplex ultrasound scanning of the autogenous arterio venous hemodialysis fistula: a vascular surgeon's perspective
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction Duplex ultrasound has become the first line of investigation for the autogenous arterio-venous hemodialysis fistula (aAVF). In recent work published by our group, we showed that duplex ultrasound was as accurate as fistulography in the assessment of fistula stenoses. The emergence of duplex ultrasound as the primary tool for examination of the aAVF is the result of better technology, and a better understanding of the anatomy, physiology and pathology of the native fistula circuit. This article addresses the assessment of the aAVF circuit (native fistula). It is universally accepted that the native fistula is greatly superior to the fistula graft2,3,4, and construction of a native fistula should be achievable in up to 90% of patients.

High-Output Heart Failure Due to an Iliac Arterio-Venous Fistula in Mycotic Aneurysm
Herein, we report a patient with arterio-venous fistula secondary to mycotic aneurysm, causing high output heart failure. The patient had one-year history of refractory heart failure and recurrent pulmonary edema. This presentation is a good example of curative surgically treatable cause of high-output congestive heart failure.Iran J Med Sci 2005; 30(1): 41-44. Keywords ● Arterio-venous fistula...

متن کاملUltrasonography Mapping of Blood Vessels Before Arteriovenous Fistula Construction
End-stage renal disease (ESRD) leads to severe illness and death if left untreated. The number of patients requiring renal replacement therapy by haemodialysis is rising rapidly [12]. A well functioning vascular access is a prerequisite for successful haemodialysis treatment. Achieving long-term haemodialysis vascular access is becoming a challenge because of an increase in elderly haemodialysi...
متن کاملUltrasound-guided cannulation of hemodialysis access
Because hemodialysis therapy cannot be performed without the cannulation of a vascular access, establishing a well-functioning vascular access is crucial. Recently, the number of patients with difficult arteriovenous (AV) fistula cannulation has increased due to changes in the epidemiology of the dialysis population. To address this issue, indications for real-time ultrasound-guided techniques ...
متن کاملVascular access to haemodialysis: a study of 38 patients.
A series of 38 patients in whom vascular access for haemodialysis was achieved by establishing an arterio-venous shunt or arterio-venous fistula, is presented. Arteriovenous fistula provides adequate vascular access for long term haemodialysis and is associated with lesser number of complications. Arterio-venous shunt on the other hand is satisfactory for obtaining vascular access for short per...
